Painting with pixels

I recently attended a series of iPhone/iPad photography and editing workshops with digital artist, photographer and author Theresa Airey.

Among the many tips and techniques I learnt on the course was how to use “painterly” apps like Artista, Painteresque and Auto Painter. These are a lot of fun and make it easy to add a simple artistic effect (watercolour, oil, sketch, etc) but fine-tuning images to get the most out of the app takes time and practice and Theresa has this down to a fine art, if you’ll pardon the pun!

These are a handful of my first attempts with some of these apps.

Word on the street

These are the type of shots where the iPhone is so good at capturing something on the fly. I was sitting in a coffee shop (Common Ground in Hamilton if you want a good cap and wrap) and was struck by the window signage contrasted against the street outside. On a whim, I shot it with KitCam’s Split Lens setting. Not bad for literally a snapshot!
