Ripe for apping

Sometimes an image just seems to have so many possibilities. I shot the original picture of the first peaches of the summer in our garden using Camera+. It was OK but I really wanted to bring out the rich, luscious colours of the fruit. I did one treatment using Photo Copier which can layer different photo, artistic or even movie effects (I chose the Hieronymus Bosch effect for a deep, earthy feel). I have started experimenting with some of the more artistic apps recently and the image was perfect for the watercolour treatment Aquarell in Auto Painter.

Water’s edge

I love how Hipstamatic can turn a simple scene into something more moody and mysterious. These were unplanned late-afternoon shots on a lane alongside Riddell’s Bay of small boats moored up amongst the mangroves at the foot of an inlet. Hipstamatic’s Tinto 1884 lens and C-Type Plate film added an aged and dramatic feel.

Roadrunners

The May 24th Marathon Derby is one of the highlights of the Bermuda Day holiday which traditionally marks the start of summer. Every year, the 13-mile race, from Somerset in the west end of the island to the capital Hamilton, attracts hundreds of runners of ages and abilities and thousands of cheering roadside fans.

The race passes the foot of our lane along picturesque Harbour Road in Warwick at around the 8-mile mark, so we always make a point of being there to cheer on our friends braving the heat and humidity. I took these shots using Hipstamatic, mostly with the Hornbecker lens/Blanko film  combo.

Street dancers

Gombey dancers are one of Bermuda’s cultural icons. Performing often at random on the island’s streets, their hypnotic and rhythmic procession to the relentless beat of snare drums is a Bermuda tradition. Their costumes and rituals are a mystical blend of the island’s African, Caribbean, Native American and British cultures.

I shot this troupe (Place’s Gombeys) in Hamilton, Bermuda using Hipstamatic’s Salvador 84 lens and DreamCanvas film to give them an other-worldly and mysterious look.
